Extend a Hand (Final Draft)
The book written by Claudia Rankine “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” Is really enjoyable the way she flows through the book linking her life situations together. It seems like she is having random memories or thoughts followed by white space for the reader to fill it in with similar experiences or just random thoughts. In the end it all comes together quite well, she begins the book by talking about emotions liked: death, loneliness, and despair, but then ends with a shine of hope. The main point I got from this close reading can be described by these words in the book “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely”. “In order for something to be handed over a hand must extend and a hand must receive. We must both be here in this world in this life in this place indicating the presence of.”(pg 131). I will discuss this and other topics in her book on the way she feels about life, loneliness, and anti-depressants. The main point I will be discussing is how humans have to start extending a hand to get a hand in return in order to co-exist peacefully.
Throughout the book we discuss different topics and we will back them up with stories or lyric essays/ poems that occurred in this person’s life. The first half of the book is very depressing; it describes the situations occurring at that time in her life and around it. She touches points like situations that occur daily in all our lives like; death, loneliness, depression, riots, and racism. The second half I believe is a little less depressing, her spirits feel slightly lifted. In this half of the book she touches topics like; life, hope, freedom, and other similar topics. The form she uses for some of these words like loneliness similar to being locked in a room with no one around that can relate to her life. Then she uses the word depression. This word means a lot to her because all of her emotions lead to loneliness. Being alone with no one to speak to about her thoughts and impulses similar to when she calls the cuicide hotline just because she thought it would be interesting. The last word she throws around is death. She thinks everyone asks the same question all the time; ”Is that person dead” and the response is usually yes. I think that is usually the answer because we don’t see these old actors on TV but we don’t care to learn anything about their life, all they are, are actors on TV. Rankine’s style of the book is just a long running book of thoughts, situations, and experiences occurring on a day to day basis at that moment of her life. The media plays a roll in this book, with images, broadcast, and commercials, similar to the ones we see on TV today.
As you can see in the book there are images that sort of relate to what emotions the writer is having in that point in her life. Those images could give the impression of sadness, loneliness, and helpless-ness, as well as isolation and perhaps freedom. With these images she describes the situation and it also helps set up the tone on the way she feels that precise moment. Images sometimes can be louder then words, it almost seems like she is asking for a someone to lend a hand to these people because they are suffering, or just want to get there voices heard.
After the lyric essay there is usually some blank space after the writer finishes the dialogue. This space can be known as white-space. Towards the bottom of these pages after that thought or story is done, I would fill in similar experiences that where happening in my life. I think that space is for the reader to fill in there own comments and similar situations, the reason why I think that is, is because she always leaves me in this state of wanting to know more about the issue or subject.
Why are we here for if not for each other? Everyone fits into a part something, it is up to us to find our personal interest and share our lives, because with out each other we cannot co-exist together. People need to start reaching their hands to create a chain of togetherness and change in our community, country, and world. Reach and receive, don’t we all wish for this especially in those times of need when death, depression, and loneliness occurs. We must not be scared, together we should not be suppressed, and together we can fix the world we live in from the mistakes created and left behind by our ancestors. It is up to all of us to make a change.
In this paragraph I will be speaking of one of the main issues that were repeated constantly and really caught my attention. The issue she talks about several times through out this stream of thought is loneliness. Loneliness in Google is defined as sadness because one has no friends or company (similar to isolation). Why and how can people become lonely? How do we isolate our selves when there are billions of people on this earth? Even when I am home alone people call me, the mail man comes to my door, my neighbors are making noise but as much as I would want to isolate my self, I find it nearly impossible. When I see friends, family members, or acquaintances that are grieving, mourning, sad or just depressed I always try to be there for her or him. This is something I believe Claudia Rankine believed; we all have to extend our hands. Basically reach out to people, help the situation we are in because tomorrow is never promised.
My thought and personal quote about this: When I look around me I always see a person next to me on my right, and another person next to me to my left, but then I feel self-conscious and I look down , I see the reflections of our shadows and they are all alike.
All the shadows are the same, the only difference is that some people have more weight on their shoulders, or have become wiser with time, but some people are just incompetent to the world and life in front of them.
Toward the middle of the book “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” the author defines loneliness in her mind as:
-Define loneliness
-yes
-It is what we can do for each other
-What do we mean each other?
-What does life mean?
-Why are we here if not for each other? (pg 62)
I think loneliness amongst death, and sadness is irrepressible. The person in this essay/poem thinks of loneliness as something we can’t do for each other. Feeling lonely, sad, isolated are issues we all face at one point or another in our lives, these moments are irrepressible feelings that are out of our control. When I feel lonely or sad about something I usually like to extend my hand to look for help. It does not matter who it is as long as someone can extend their hand and help me with my situation. Why are we here if not for each other?
In this book the author ties loneliness with legal substance abuse due to the rising anti-depressants pharmaceutical industry that makes 300 billion dollars a year in the U.S. It is expected to rise to 400 billion dollars within the next 3 years. The country is becoming deeply dependent on happy pills that are altering our brain evolution now but more in the future. People want to live a false reality; they think that by taking a happy pill life is going to become brighter and almost worth living. Here is another quote from the book that I feel I can personally relate to. She writes “One commercial for Paxil simply says: Your Life Is Waiting… For what does it wait? For life I guess.” I remember this commercial almost well. I was on Paxil for about 2 years. This was the medicine given to me by my doctor a few months after my car accident in 2009. I had to take 2 paxil pills through out the day, usually one pill in the morning and one pill before I went to sleep at night. As I would stay up late night watching re-runs, I remember this commercial coming on several times very well. Anti-depressant medication commercials usually only come on at night. As I lay on the bed deeply sedated by the effects of this pill all I saw was complete darkness with these white flashing words “Your life is waiting” in the background a loud siren noise would come on as the words flashed for a few seconds. I always laid in bed fkd up in the head while loosing sleep and I would wonder, why is this pill not doing anything for me? I would take two a day but still felt like my life had ended. I don’t think at that point in my life I would of ever figured out that commercial, I was living life but life was not making me want to live. Now I see it differently, and I wonder if my situation would have been worst with out the Paxil. However I came up with a conclusion “I just needed something stronger” (lol).
All and all I really enjoyed this book. I can relate to her stories and at times I would take her situation and my situations and think back at how similar are emotions were during that point of our lives. Death, sadness, and loneliness are irrepressible emotions we cannot control. Everyone suffers and anti-depressants might help but don’t become pill dependent, and abuse the system, extend your hand and someone will extend theirs.

In the book written by Claudia Rankine “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” is good. Towards the bottom of these pages after that thought or story is done, I would fill in similar experiences that where happening in my life. I think that space is for the reader to fill in there own comments and similar situations.
In the intro of my essay, I took a quote from page 131. It says “In order for something to be…Indicates the presence of.” This speaks to me; we have to start extending our hands. This is something I believe Claudia Rankine believed; we all have to extend our hands. Basically reach out to people, help the situation we are in because tomorrow is never promised.
My thought and personal quote about this, “When I look around me I always see a person next to me on my right, and another person next to me to my left, but then I feel self-conscious and I look down , and I see the reflections of our shadows and they are all alike.”
All the shadows are the same, the only difference is that some people have more weight on their shoulders, or have become wiser with time, but some people are just incompetent to the world and life in front of them.
I “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” toward the middle there is another quote she uses to defines loneliness in her head.
-Define loneliness
-yes
-It is what we can do for each other
-What do we mean each other?
-What does life mean?
-Why are we here if not for each other? (pg62)
I think loneliness death, and sadness is irrepressible. The person in this essay/poem thinks of loneliness as something we can’t do for each other. Feeling lonely, sad, isolated are issues we all face at one point or another in our lives. These moments are irrepressible and out of our controls. When I feel lonely or sad about something I usually like to extend my hand to look for help. Usually a friend or family member extends their hand and help me with my situation. Sometimes i feel so down that i dont even care who i talk to, it could be some random person i meet (as long as they aren't psychopaths or crazier then me:). We all can take the writers advice; Why are we here if not for each other?
In this book the author ties loneliness with legal substance abuse due to the rising anti-depressants pharmaceutical industry that makes 300 billion dollars a year in the U.S. It is expected to rise to 400 billion dollars within the next 3 years. The country is becoming deeply dependent on happy pills that are altering our brain evolution now but more in the future.
